With their latest redsn0w 0.9.7 RC7, iPhone Dev Team have introduced a new and simple way to boot tethered iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It should be a sigh of relief for users who have tethered jailbreak iOS 4.2.1.

Since you’ll need to boot tethered on each restart, it’s recommended that you create a shortcut for that so that you have to avoid running through the steps each time. This guide will help you doing just that:

How to Boot Tethered iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch

Before you Begin:

Download iOS 4.2.1 IPSW for your device (newer devices only, since older devices already have untethered jailbreak)

Download redsn0w 0.9.7 (Windows: Redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc7b.zip | Mac: Redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc7.zip)

Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 using Redsn0w

Important: For ease of use, put all the files (redsn0w and iOS 4.2.1 IPSW ) at the same location

Now follow this guide:

Method 1

Step 1: Extract the downloaded redsn0w in C: drive (redsn0w.exe should be on C:)

Step 2: Place the iOS 4.2.1 IPSW on C:

Step 3: Download the one-click tethered boot shortcuts that we created. (Download Link)

Step 4: Run the relevant shortcut for your device. That’s it!

For any of these shortcuts to work, you must have iOS 4.2.1 IPSW and redsn0w.exe to be placed at C:. Id it doesn’t work, follow the method 2.

Now each time you need to boot tethered, just double-click the shortcut that you created and you’re right into it. Not the ideal solution but that’s perhaps the shortest possible way to boot tethered for now.

Method 2: Create Boot Tethered Shortcut

Step 1: Extract the downloaded redsn0w

Step 2: Right click on Desktop, select New > Shortcut

Step 3: In Create Shortcut wizard, enter:

Path-of-redsn0w.exe + -j -i + “Path-of-iOS-4.2.1-IPSW”

Examples:

  • For iPhone 4: D:redsn0w.exe -j -i “D:iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw”
  • For iPhone 3GS: D:redsn0w.exe -j -i “D:iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw”
  • For iPad: D:redsn0w.exe -j -i “D:iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw”
  • For iPod Touch 4G: D:redsn0w.exe -j -i “D:iPod4,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw”
  • For iPod Touch 3G: D:redsn0w.exe -j -i “D:iPod3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw”

Now click “Next”.

Note: I had redsn0w .exe and iOS 4.2.1 IPSW stored in D: drive. If your files are placed elsewhere, enter the relevant path.

Create Boot Tethered Shortcut

Step 4: Name the shortcut and click “Finish”.

Step 5: Double click the shortcut that you created to boot tethered.
