How to Install iOS 4.2 Beta on iPad NOW [Developers UDID Required]

Want to install iOS 4.2 Beta on iPad? This guide will help you along the process. However, before you proceed, you should know that iOS 4.2 for iPad Beta is meant for developers only, not for the common users. So, proceed at your own risk, here’s the guide to install iOS 4.2 Beta firmware on iPad:

Warning for Non-Developers: If you don’t have the developer UDID, DO NOT proceed as it will be required for activation and you may not be able to downgrade either.

Install iOS 4.2 Beta on iPad

Step 1: Download, install and run latest iTunes (iTunes 10)

Step 2: Download iOS 4.2 Beta for iPad

Step 3: Connect your iPad and sync with iTunes

Step 4: From left sidebar in iTunes, select your device (click on it). iTunes will show device summary.

Step 5: Now press and hold Shift key (for Windows) or Alt key (for Mac) and click on “Restore”. You’ll find “Restore” button at the bottom right side of iTunes.

Step 6: A pop up should appear, select the of iOS 4.2 Beta IPSW and press Ok.

Step 7: That’s all from your end, now iTunes will perform some automated steps to complete the installation. Your iPad will restart once the progress is complete.

Step 8: Once it restarts, you will need the developer UDID to activate your device. Activate it.

Enjoy the great iOS 4.2 features like multitasking, Folders and AirPrint etc.

So… you’re saying that after the 4.2 firmware is installed on the iPad and the “Connect to iTunes” screen comes on and you connect to iTunes for the second time, iTunes will activate your iPad? I don’t think that’s how it works… I hope I’m wrong though because I really want 4.2.

Abdul, #3 is exactly right, do not follow the steps in this article.

Apple users press Alt and click on “Update”, not “restore”.

Thank you OP and Abdul. Indeed, I followed Abdul’s instructions and got the thing installed. All is well, except to the fact all my “sample borrowed” apps don’t run anymore. It seems iOS 4.2 has the interesting feature to block them running and there is no JB at the present moment.

About the UDID: if you already have a simple Apple Store ID, you only have to register it at the Apple Developer Center. Don’t pay the yearly $99 fee. It isn’t needed! imodzone.net has a excellent tracker seeding all the new torrents. Search the web!

@ross Thompson and @Abdul i’ve tried as u say but it gives me error 3002 !!! i had already uploaded ios5 and then downgraded to 4.3.3 because it told me while i was setting up on the ipad that my ipad is not activated… Do you know how to resolve this’??
