Redsn0w Unable to Recognize Specified IPSW? [Solution]

Just after the release of redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 5 release 3, many of users are facing the error message “unable to recognize specified IPSW”. This message keeps popping up as you try to browse for iOS4 for iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G.

Update: See solution at the end of the post.

There is no word from iPhone Dev team on this error message while plenty of users continue to face problems with redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 5-3.

Solution:

There could be two reasons that redsn0w is not detecting iOS 4 IPSW. You may be using wrong version of redsn0w, be sure to use redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5-5 (download: Windows | Mac). Other reason could be that you’ll be using wrong version of iOS 4. Redsn0w 0.9.5 B5-5 won’t detect iOS4 GM IPSW. You must have final version of iOS 4 (Direct download links). Use these tools and follow our step by step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 4. There won’t be any problems this time around.

Update: If you are still facing this error message, try keeping your files in a location other than desktop. Moving redsn0w and IPSW files in some directory is reportedly working for some users. Also try with all the files in same directory.

Mac users with iPhone 3GS, 3G (Old bootrom only) can now jailbreak iOS 4 with PwnageTool 4.0. Windows users should wait for sn0wbreeze 1.6.

Important

For those who are still out of luck despite following the workarounds posted here, give redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 release 4 a try. Release 4 primarily fixes the iBooks issue but you can try it out if release 3 doesn’t recognize your IPSW. If you still face problems, try an alternate:

Windows Users: Use sn0wbreeze 1.6.1 (Instructions here)

Mac Users: Use PwnageTool

i have downloaded the 3G firmware and the redsnow beta 5 from this article and still redsnow is giving me the message unable to recognize specified ipsw.

  i was having same problem restoring 4.0.2 and it worked with me perfectly when i pointed redsn0w to earlier 4.0 firmware….
  Before i did tis i tried maybe tens of fixing articles, redownloading firmware, redsn0w with no luck at all…

  I was having the sae problem using the redsn0w 0.9.5 b5-3. I downloaded b5-4 and it went off without a hitch. I used the iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw. Good luck.

Yes for Ipod Touch 3g 32 GB redsnow 0.9.5 B5-3 will not recognize the firmware to be jailbroken. The message is “unable to recognize specified ipsw”. I’m trying to jailbreak iOS 4.0 iPod3,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.

    Looked into PwnageTool listed above which states its compatible with 3gs. How ever when I read up on pwnage itself, it states I have to have previously jailbroken my phone before? Is this the only alternative to Jailbraking my 3gs, or is there something out that I just haven’t heard of yet?

the error is that you have the files in your desktop put in on some directory and try again

After it not recognizing the ispw like 15 times and downloading it from many different places. moving the files to the c drive works.

Hi guys. I tested this.

I tested all of this on a 3G and a 3GS phones. Result:

1. iPhone 3G: WORKS
It works on iPhone 3G with Firmware 4.0

2. iPHone 3GS: DOES NOT WORK
IT DOES NOT WORK on iPhone 3GS with the 4.0 Firmware.
Redsn0w won’t recognize the IPSW file after you browsed for it.

Hello i’m triyng jailbreak my iphone 3g 4.0.1
and all the time appers the same erros
UNEABKE TO RECORNIZE IPSW 4.0, i did try with redsnow 0.9.5 Beta 5-3 and others jailbreaks, but just don’t work.
I really don’t know why…. I did restore and update my iphone and itunes, but still with the same problem..

thats the one that it recognized for me.
If you havent already tried it, google that ipsw above and the redsnow and download those and try em. My phone still came out in 4.0.1

@vinny I’m having the same problem. Tried a couple of different versions of both redsnow and iPhone firmware. Tried downloading the firmware from a couple of different locations. Also used the Apple Computer/iTunes folder location. Still get the error “Unable to recognize specified ipsw.” Bloody frustrating. I’m sure there’s a solution somewhere … so I;ll keep on searching … time to call it quits for today though … been at it for way too long! Shoulda been easy … shouldn’t have updated to 4.0!

when i try to download the iOS firmware from above it immediately turns it into a zip package which turns into a folder containing no ipsw files. it also is re-labeled iPhone1,2_4. This has happened with all other files i have tried as well. Any help would be great.

No solution. Still can’t get past “Unable to recognize specified ipsw” no matter what release I try (both of RedSn0w and ipsw). Have tried EVERYthing. Going overseas Tuesday and want to use my iPhone when I get there … it will be a glorified iPod until the devteam comes up with the fix. Going to have to wait it out … mayjah bummah.

Hit browse in redsnow -5 and then type in ip and then select the file iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.zip. If u dont have it already

you must use the same ipsw that you have on your phone or on your touch, so if you have 4.0 on ur device download the same ipsw it will not recognize anything different from whats on your device

use the latest version (redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5), i tried it and it worked perfectly. However, you must already know how to go into DFU mode else, a first timer cannot get there with the instruction on this version.

to go to DFU,
put off your phone
connect it to the computer
press power button for 2 seconds and without relEASING, PRESS THE HOME BUTTON also
keep them both pressed for about 8 seconds,
then release the power button only (keep holding the home button)
You will then see the activity on your installation to show you it was successful

Just change the name of the IPSW file to something without special characters or spaces (like iphone4.ipsw , for example).

I have a 3GS old boot rom and get the not recognized error despite all the suggestions here. I am running Windows 7 in all compatibility modes.

3GS on 4.2 and the same message. Have tried all here to no avail.
I need to change the baseband to 06.15.00 so that I can unlock as currently on 05.14.02. The only was I can find to do this is with redsnow

FOR ME HELP !!!
Unplug and restart you iDevice and put the .ipsw file into the redsnow folder !! There will be 4 files (boot-…,credits, file.ipsw and redsnow) turn the iDevice on and plug in. Now try to open Redsnow again and folow steps. NO ERROR MESSAGE NOW !!!!
