A team of developers has been able to run Linux on iPad. Which means that we’d soon be able to install Linux on iPad, iPod Touch 4G and other iOS devices soon. Patrick Wildt, who’s been working to port Linux on iPhone 4 and iPad, posted a picture of iPad running Linux:

Linux on iPad

Patrick (BluerisEN) added:

So, we finally got Linux running on a mirror. :)

For now, its not supported on the iPad 2. However, all A4 devices are supported which means it will work on iPhone 4 as well.

No iPad 2 support (yet). We don’t have that device plus it isn’t easy developing such stuff w/o low-level-bootloader exploits. :/

iDroidProject confirmed A4 support:

Note, kernel shown by @BluerisEN and @rickytaylor26 is applicable to _all_ A4 devices, not just iPad & iPod Touch 4G

This looks exciting. We may see Android on iPad and all other A4 devices as well, in near future. For now it’s the core Linux, that’s been ported over. More details of the project would be revealed at MyGreatFest which is scheduled to be held next month.

Android port for iPhone 3G has already been available for quite some time now but there was no port for newer devices. Now with proof of Linux running on iPad, we can hope for a release soon.

WARNING: We haven’t tested this method personally and can’t guarantee if this will work. Try this at your own risk.

DISCLAIMER: Apple iOS Betas are meant for iOS developers only. If you are a developer, you will have the UDID. If otherwise, we do not recommend non-developers to try and install iOS 4.3 Beta 2. Install iOS 4.3 Beta 2 on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

Before you Begin:

Step 1: Load the downloaded iOS 4.3 beta 2 IPSW to your device (see how to load custom IPSW)

Step 2: Jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.6 RC8

Step 3: SSH into iPhone using iFunBox or WinCSP on Windows or CyberDuck on Mac

Step 4: In iPhone file hierarchy, navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices
