iPhone 4S has been jailbroken! The awesome iPhone Dev Team have done it again. MuscleNerd showed off couple of screenshots, one of them was of Cydia on iPhone 4S while other one showed iPhone 4S root access. It’s very early stage in iPhone 4S jailbreak on iOS 5.0 but looks really exciting. As MuscleNerd noted:

Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left

So there’s lot of work left for the dev team and lot of wait required for those wanting to jailbreak iPhone 4S iOS 5.0. However, its great start. Although there is no official word on it yet, its almost certain that it will also jailbreak iPad 2 5.0. Here are screenshots:

This is interesting. iPhone jailbreaking is a million dollar business, says IBTimes. While this sounds hard to digest, the figures are based on growth of Cydia and sales of paid Cydia apps. While most of them are free, there are some handy paid apps in Cydia that people will actually spend on. Here are some top Cydia apps and their prices:

Cydia App Features Price
MyWi Convert your iPhone into WiFi Hotspot $20
iRealSMS Enhances the native Messaging app $13
WiFiSync Sync with iTunes wirelessly $10
SwirlyMMS Send and Receive MMS $12
PkgBackup Backup your Cydia apps $8
iProtect Password-protect your apps, contacts, photos and phone app. $9
iFile Browse the iOS filesystem $4

These are just few to list. There are number of other apps, themes and tweaks that can be purchased from Cydia. That, according to the sources, makes jailbreaking a million dollar business. As IBTimes puts it:

Cydia is rather a big brother in the jailbreaking world, some sort of a monolith. The Washington Post reported that Cydia now earns about $10 million in annual revenue and counts about 4.5 million active weekly users hunting for apps. Freeman launched Cydia in 2008. And his outfit is growing by the day and expanding operations. Freeman told the Post that he is hiring too!

Jailbreak Mac: Cydia for Mac OS X to Release Soon!

On December 11, 2010, in Hacks, News, by TechAdmin
0

Jay Freeman aka Saurik has confirmed that Cydia for Mac OS X could release soon. So this means you’d be able to jailbreak Mac OS X and install Mac Cydia which will allow you to get the kind of apps that Apple won’t allow in Mac App Store.

Jay Freeman (Saurik)

While speaking at 360|MacDev, Saurik said:

There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.

Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available “within weeks.” With today’s news that the Mac App Store will not support in-app purchases, something that is critical to the freemium app model that is so successful in the iOS world, a Mac Cydia might be just the web store for a number of Mac developers.

So, expect Mac Cydia to release in weeks.

Apple iOS 4.2.1 firmware changes the iPad orientation lock button to the mute button like in iPhone. If you find it annoying, NoMute for iPad gets hardware orientation lock back for you and converts iPad 4.2.1 mute button to orientation lock button again like in iPad 3.2.2. You’ll need to jailbreak iPad 4.2.1 first though, then you can head to Cydia to get NoMute for iPad. Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 4 is the only jailbreak available for iOS 4.2.1 on iPad at the moment and it is tethered.
