Use Facebook Chat Client while Chat is Down for Maintenance

Posted by | Social Media | 2 Comments

Facebook took the chat down for maintenance moments after a Facebook chat security hole was identified that allowed users to view live chats and pending friend requests of their Facebook friends. While chat is down for maintenance for more than an hour, you can still use third party clients like AOL an Pidgin to use Facebook chat. See our complete guides to use Facebook chat on third party clients:

As long as the Facebook Chat on website is concerned, we are not sure when it will go back online.

Facebook Chat is Down. To Fix Security Hole?

Posted by | Social Media | 2 Comments

Well, moments after a security hole was detected, Facebook Chat is down for maintenance. Now Facebook chat is showing this message:

“Chat is down for maintenance at this time.”

This could possibly be to stop users from using the trick and access their friends’ live chat on Facebook. Another possibility is that Facebook may be working to fix this bug before it causes their users to go wild for security hole of such a sensitive nature. Here is the screenshot showing Facebook Chat is down for Maintenance:

Let’s see how Facebook overcomes this latest security lapse and what they have to say on this.

Update: While Facebook chat is down for maintenance, you can still chat with your Facebook friends, see details.

PidginLets see how to configure Pidgin client for Facebook to make it work as Facebook messenger. Pidgin is the universal chat client that offers a single place to chat with your friends on MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, MySpace and many others and just now they have support for Facebook Chat. As Pidgin supports XMPP for instant messaging that automatically enables the IM client to be eligible for Facebook Chat.

Pidgin is perhaps the best chat client out there that can offer you a single place to chat with your friends on Facebook using a third party desktop based IM client. It’s open source and free to use. However configuring Facebook Chat on Pidgin is bit tricky and is not as easy as it was with AIM. In this little tutorial, we will try to guide you and show you, with screenshots, how to configure Pidgin client for Facebook Chat.

You can configure Pidgin for Facebook Chat in following steps:

Download and Install Pidgin

On launching Pidgin client, you will see following screen:

Pidgin Welcome

Click on “Add” button, this will open settings box for new account.

In basic settings, type information as:

  • Protocol: XMPP
  • Username: Enter your Facebook Username. You must have a username to use Facebook chat on 3rd party clients. If you don’t have one, go to facebook.com/username to get a username.
  • Domain: chat.facebook.com
  • Resource: Pidgin
  • Password: Enter your Facebook Account password

Here is how completed basic settings look like:

Pidgin Basic Settings

After filling up basic settings, go to “Advanced” tab

  • Disable the first checkbox, titled “Require SSL/TLS”. Fill in other advanced settings as:
  • Connect Port: 5222
  • Connect Server: chat.facebook.com
  • Let other information remain unchanged and click “Save” button.

Here is the screenshot of completed advanced settings box:

You are all set to chat with your Facebook friends using Pidgin. You can also put your status online/offline.

Facebook Chat on Your Desktop IM Clients

Facebook Chat EverywhereYes! Now any IM client or messenger could support Facebook Chat. You don’t have to stay logged in to Facebook in your browser and can receive messages from your friends, right on your IM client. Facebook Messenger is probably the only thing that has been lacking in otherwise a complete social network. Now Facebook Chat supports Jabber/XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), an open protocol for instant messaging, that can be integrated into any desktop or web based software. Google Talk also uses same protocol. This could benefit both, Facebook users as well as Facebook developers.

For Facebook users, it has been long due to have a trustable Facebook Messenger that could give them access to Facebook chat even after they closed their browser. Browser chat has also been missing important features like message alerts and sounds etc. Now we may see improved applications embedding Facebook chat.

Facebook developers get an exciting new prospect to work upon. They can integrate Facebook chat in web applications or desktop clients. To make it easier, Facebook is also launching support for Facebook Connect that will address the issues Facebook chat client developers may face. And great thing is that adding your Jabber based chat client to Facebook is very easy, just like implementing the Facebook Connect is.

Important Points to consider:

For Facebook Chat on 3rd party apps, you MUST have a Facebook Username

This is a must now. If you want to use a Jabber based desktop client to use Facebook Chat, you must have a Facebook username. Reason: Your chat identity will be username@chat.facebook.com. If you haven’t got a username, you can’t access Facebook Chat on AIM, Pidgin, Adium, iChat or any other IM client. To get a Facebook username, go to http://www.facebook.com/username.

When Logged into IM, You’ll Appear Online on Facebook

If you are logged into a third party chat client, you will appear online on Facebook.

Chat Settings can be changed from Facebook only, not from third party chat clients. You can allow/block friends from Facebook Chat after logging into Facebook. Only friends you chose will appear on Facebook Chat clients.
