MeasureIt 0.4.8 (Firefox 4 compatible) is a great app for web designers as they can measure anything in their browser frame with the ruler. MeasureIt for Firefox adds a toolbar button with which you can draw a ruler on screen and measure height or width of any component that is in your browser frame.

How to run MeasureIt in Firefox 4

I installed MeasureIt on Firefox 4, but couldn’t locate the button. It installed correctly but MeasureIt disappeared after it installed. Some experimentation lead me to a solution that I thought would be worth sharing for those who have MeasureIt missing issues.

Step 1: Install MeasureIt-0.4.8-fx.xpi and restart your browser

Step 2: Enable the Firefox 4 add-on bar (if you want MeasureIt button to be shown on Status bar / add-on bar)

Step 3: Right click on add-on bar and click “Customize…”

Step 4: Locate the MeasureIt button and drag it to the location where you want it to be shown.

Step 5: Click on MeasureIt button and start measuring.

Oh and in case you didn’t know, you can run Firefox 4 and Firefox 3 simultaneously and install separate extensions for both.

I installed Firefox 4 RC just recently and first question that came to my mind was: Where is Firefox 4 Status Bar? It was missing from the View menu so I thought it might have been removed? Well, it’s actually been replaced, sort of.

Mozilla has introduced Firefox 4 Add-on bar that replaces the Status Bar. So, you can install all the add-ons on the add-on bar that were used to be installed on Status Bar but there’s one thing that is missing. You won’t be able to see the URL while you hover over a link, as was the case in Firefox 3. Instead, the URL will appear just above the add-on bar. Pretty much the same way as it’s shown in Google Chrome.

To enable Status Bar / Add-on Bar: Click on Firefox Menu on top left, go to Options and select the Add-on bar.

Like it or not, you’ll have to live by this feature for now. If you like it traditional way, you can run Firefox 4 and Firefox 3 simultaneously.

Mozilla has just released Firefox 4 RC for download. I won’t be surprised if you want to run Firefox 4 and 3 simultaneously. Fortunately, there’s a workaround that lets you run Firefox 4 and 3 side by side. All you have to do is to assign a different profile to either of 2 Firefox versions and you’re done.

Here’s the guide:

How to Run Firefox 4 and 3 Simultaneously

Important: We’re assuming you have Firefox 3 installed. Now you got to install Firefox 4 at a different location.

Step 1: Download Firefox 4 RC and launch the setup

Step 2: Opt for “Custom” installation option and click Next

Firefox 4 Custom Setup

Step 3: When it asks for Destination Folder, specify a different path, for example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4

Firefox 4 installation path

It’s because Firefox 3.6 would be installed in default path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox.

Step 4: Click Next and install the Firefox.

When installation completes:

Step 5: Press Window key + R to open the Run menu, type this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p -no-remote

Firefox.exe -p -no-remote

This will open Firefox Profile Manager that will allow you to add / remove Firefox Profiles.

Step 6: Create a new Profile and name it (I named it FF4). It’s also recommended to rename the default profile, I renamed it to FF3.

Firefox Profile Manager

Step 7: Create Desktop shortcuts for both Firefox 3 and Firefox 4.

Step 8: Right click on Firefox 4 shortcut and click on Properties.

Step 9: In the Target field, add this text at the end:

-p FF4 -no-remote

FF4 = name of the profile.

See the screenshot below for help.

Firefox Shortcut

Now click OK.

Now when FF4 profile has been assigned to Firefox 4, you need to assign FF3 profile to Firefox 3.

Step 10: Repeat the steps 8 and 9 for Firefox 3 shortcut.

That’s it. Now you can run Firefox 4 and Firefox 3 simultaneously, side by side. To test it, click on both of the shortcuts one by one. You will notice that 2 Firefox windows will open. Here is the video guide, if you need any further help:

I’m using Firefox 3.6.15 and Firefox 4 RC1!

64 bit version of Firefox 4.0 for Windows 7 and Vista is now available for download. This is the first time Mozilla have launched x64 version of Firefox that can run on 64 bit Windows 7 and Vista. Prior to that, only Internet Explorer supports 64 bit OS versions but now Mozilla have also joined in with their newly launched Firefox 4.0. This is pre alpha release of the browser though but should work well. Download filename “Firefox-3.7a5pre.en-US.win64-x86_64” is bit confusing though as it includes Firefox 3.7 but it actually is Firefox 4.0 in disguise.

Firefox 4.0 64 bit can be downloaded from Mozilla FTP servers.
