You need to have iOS 4 or later on iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch. Android users should have Android 2.2 Froyo.

FaceTime on iPad 2 may be coming this holiday season. It’s still a rumor though but there’s every chance that iPad 2 will be getting a front facing camera to enable FaceTime on iPad 2 like we now have with iPod Touch 4G. This news was picked up by AppleInsider reportedly from a person who’s aware of Apple’s future plans for the product. Given the way Apple is looking to expand its FaceTime app to other platforms, this certainly looks to be true.

FaceTime on iPad

FaceTime on iPad

It should be noted that Apple is all set to roll out iOS 4.2 for iPad in November and iPad 2 release might not be that far away. Looks like iOS 4.2 and iPad 2 are going to put Apple in great position to dominate the tablets market. iOS 4.2 will include many of features that OS 3.2 lacks which provoked some criticism when iPad was released back in January. And iPad 2 might include some hardware specs that first gen iPad didn’t have, most prominent of which is the Camera.

Let’s see if the rumors prove to be true.

Apple September 1 Event

Apple is holding a special event on September 1, 2010 and that event is likely to be related to the music. So, this might be iPod Touch 4th Generation release date. If rumors are to be believed, Apple iPod Touch 4 will be coming with a 5 MegaPixel camera and a front facing camera for FaceTime over iPod Touch 4. These specs were shown off in what is believed to be a leaked iTouch 4 back in July. Earlier, another leaked version from May this year hinted a 2 MegaPixels camera. Whatever it may be, we’re almost certain it will be featuring dual camera. We’ll come to know soon than we expected, it’s just a week away; September 1, 2010! Oh, and it’s not Tuesday this time :-) . Stay tuned for more.

iOS 4.0.2 for iPod Touch 2G Released

On August 17, 2010, in Gadgets, by TechAdmin

Apple has finally released iOS 4.0.2 for iPod Touch 2G after the device was denied an update to the version of iOS that fixed the exploit used in JailbreakMe. That PDF exploit in iOS 4 and iOS 4.0.1 not only allowed JailbreakMe to jailbreak you iPhone or iPad but could also open your device to possible vulnerabilities. Earlier iOS 4.0.2 was released for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch but older devices, including iPod Touch 2G were omitted.

Now you can update to iOS 4.0.2 as update is available for public download but you will lose your jailbreak.

Current version of Mobile Terminal for iPhone crashes on iOS 4. To resolve the problem, you can install Mobile Terminal 4.26 that works fine on iOS 4 / iOS 4.0.1. I tried this on iPhone 3GS and it works like charm. Here are step by step instructions:

Step 1: Jailbreak iPhone / iPad with JailbreakMe

Step 2: Download Mobile Terminal 4.26 (MobileTerminal-426.deb) to your desktop

Step 3: SSH into iPhone. Windows Users: Use i-FunBox or WinCSP. Mac Users: Use CyberDuck

Step 4: Copy the MobileTerminal-426.deb to /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall

If you can’t locate the “Cydia” folder in “Media”, create it. Then create another folder named “AutoInstall” in “Cydia” folder and copy the .deb file there.

Step 5: Reboot iPhone / iPad.

Once device reboot is complete, you should find Mobile Terminal on your SpringBoard. Run it and this time Mobile Terminal will not crash.

Note: After the reboot, if you can’t find Terminal app on your SpringBoard, reboot your device again, this should work now.

UPDATE: An update to Terminal is now available. Try Mobile Terminal 511-1 now.

After releasing iOS 4.1 Beta for developers, Apple has rolled out iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. iOS 4.0.1 is now available for public download. You can either update it from iTunes or can download iOS 4.0.1 with direct link and then load the IPSW to the iPhone. Here are the links:

iOS 4.0.1 update with iTunes

Safe for Jailbreak and Unlock?

Probably, yes. Apple iOS 4.0.1 is NOT available for iPod Touch so this release is supposedly to fix signal issues with iPhone. However, iOS 4.0.1 doesn’t update the iPhone baseband that still remains 05.13.04 after 4.0.1 update. So, if you want an unlock, you can update to iOS 4.0.1 to see the pretty signal bars ;-) . Ultrasn0w 0.93 should still work to unlock iPhone as it previously does (guide to unlock iPhone with ultrasn0w). There’s no jailbreak tool available for iOS 4.0.1 at the moment though hence you’ll have to wait for next comex jailbreak (Spirit jailbreak) that will jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) and all other iDevices.

So if you have already updated to iOS 4, you can upgrade to iOS 4.0.1 as well but be sure to save iOS 4 SHSH blobs before you update.

Android marketshare experienced a big leap as it grew from 9% in February 2010 to 13% in May. This was revealed by the statistics report issued by comScore. Here is head to head comparison:

  Share (%) of Smartphone Subscribers
OS Feb 2010 May 2010 Change
RIM BlackBerry 42.1% 41.7% -0.4
Apple iOS 25.4% 24.4% -1.0
Windows Mobile 15.1% 13.2% -1.9
Google Android 9.0% 13.0% +4.0
Palm OS 5.4% 4.8% -0.6

(Stats via PRNewsWire)

RIM BlackBerry

Things look good for RIM at the moment as it continues to dominate the market with 42% marketshare. With BlackBerry 6.0 around the corner and release of devices like BlackBerry 9800 RIM may continue its steady growth.

Apple iOS

Apple marketshare dropped from March to May but it is expected to rise with release of iOS4 and considering the phenomenal success of iPhone 4. So, Apple will continue to be the biggest threat to RIM domination in US smartphone market.

Windows Mobile

Microsoft Windows Mobile seems like the one that has lost the most among all. Main reason could be because there are no new devices being introduced. New Windows Phone 7 smartphones are expected to arrive in October this year. HTC Mozart could be among the first devices to come with WP7.

Google Android

Google Android experienced record growth from March to May and it will continue to grow due to range of handsets it continues to features on. From HTC EVO 4G to Samsung Galaxy S and Motorola Droid X, all are worthy competitors to Apple iPhone 4. Android also features on low and mid range smartphones like Samsung Intercept which gives it great advantage on comparatively expensive Apple iPhone and RIM BlackBerry. You might like our comparison of some great Android power mobile devices.

Palm OS

Future growth of Palm OS is still in question after HP took it over. However, it has managed not to fall much and has maintained its marketshare well compared to iPhone and Windows Mobile.

Issues with iOS4 Update

On June 21, 2010, in Mobiles, by TechAdmin

Many of users are reportedly having issues while updating to iOS4. On top of them all are iOS 4 activation issues that are preventing users from upgrading to iOS4 on iPhone and iPod Touch. Here are some of the other issues that many of users are experiencing at the moment:

Contacts Being Deleted and Not Being Restored: That’s pathetic of all. iOS4 deletes all contacts and if you had a backup of contacts, iOS 4 will not restore the backup. It leaves users wondering on how to restore deleted contacts.

Game Center not appearing in iOS 4: It’s been for all the users, looks like Apple has dropped the GameCenter from iOS4 release altogether.

Unknown Error Occurred (3002): The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (3002).

Photo Sync Problems: Photos synced with iPhoto appear blurry

iPhone Reboot Loop: iOS4 upgrade fails and device is caught in reboot loop, restarting again and again.

Thankfully though, its not happening to all users. If you want it a try, download iOS4 and then move on to our guide on how to install iOS 4 to update your device. But remember, there is no jailbreak tool for iOS 4 as yet but it may be here soon. Ultrasn0w 0.93 is already out though and once a jailbreak tool is available, you can unlock iPhone using ultrasn0w. We could see updated redsn0w as well as sn0wbreeze some time soon.
