Now when we have a new name for iPhone OS in iOS 4.0, Apple has made iOS 4.0 available for download for developers. If you have a developer account with Apple, head to developers section, log in and download iOS 4.0.

iOS 4

With iPhone 4 announcement, Apple has renamed the iPhone OS 4.0 to iOS 4. I’m sure Apple would have considered all the legal issues with the name prior to getting iOS 4 as the new name but Cisco already has IOS registered for Internetwork Operating System. Anyways, this new name makes sense since iPhone OS now runs on iPad as well and we may also see it on some other devices as well.

Apple iOS GM (Golden Master) Candidate will be available for download for developers today. So, we’re expected to see lot of talk on that, especially in jailbreak community.

Update: iOS 4 SDK is now available for download from Apple Developers Center.

P0sixninja is all set to release idevicerestore that will allow you to install iPhone OS 4.0 without having registered with Apple. Here is what P0sixninja’s reads:

“Just installed 4.0b4 from linux without a registered UUID. idevicerestore is nearing completion”.

Here is the screenshot:

So, we can expect a release of iDeviceRestore soon, eh?

Redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 4 is now available for download. This is updated version of Redsn0w 0.9.5 for Mac that lets you jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 4.0 Beta 4. Like with previous release, this update is intended for jailbreak app developers so that they can get their things ready once Apple releases final version of iPhone OS 4.0. So, common users should stay away from 0.9.5 Beta 4 and wait for the final release of OS 4.0 firmware.

Here are some quick facts about this update:

  • Jailbreaks iPhone OS 4.0 (Beta 1/Beta 4)
  • Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 4 works with iPhone 3G only (for now)
  • This release is for Mac only, Windows version is not available
  • Works on activated devices only
  • Redsn0w does NOT unlock iPhone. If you were looking for carrier unlock, wait for the release of ultrasn0w or blacksn0w.

To jailbreak iPhone 4.0 Beta with Redsn0w 0.9.5 B4, download redsn0w 0.9.5 and follow the instructions posted here.

Update: An updated version of redsn0w is available, download redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5.

How to Decrypt iPhone Firmware

On April 28, 2010, in How to, by TechAdmin

Decrypting iPhone firmware will allow you to browse the iPhone firmware files and make any changes if you wanted to. Here is step by step guide on how to decrypt iPhone firmware. This process can be applied to decrypt iPhone OS 4.0, OS 3.1.3, OS 3.2 and any other firmware. However you should have decryption keys to decrypt the iPhone firmware. Here is the process:

Step 1: Download VFDECRYPT for Windows, Mac or Linux and extract it.

Step 2: Now start Command Prompt (Windows) in directory where you extracted VFDECRYPT and run following command:

For Windows: vfdecrypt.exe -i <dmg> -o decrypted_fs.dmg -k <key>

For Mac or Linux: /vfdecrypt -i <dmg> -o decrypted_fs.dmg -k <key>

Replace “<dmg>” with extracted DMG from the IPSW file. And replace “<key>” with decryption key of your device.

That’s it! Your iPhone firmware should have been decrypted now. You can mount and browse it and make any changes if required.

If you upgraded to iPhone OS 4.0 Beta and, for some reason, want to downgrade OS 4.0 to iPhone OS 3.1.3, read the step by step guide below on how to downgrade iPhone OS 4.0 to 3.1.3:

Things you will need

How to Downgrade iPhone 4.0 to 3.1.3

Step 1: Put your iPhone in DFU mode (see how to)

Step 2: Restore the original 3.1.3 firmware using iTunes (see how to)

During the restore process you will get 1015 error saying “iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred”. Ignore this message.

Step 3: Open Command Prompt (Windows OS) or Terminal Shell (Mac), reach the location of iRecovery file in Command Prompt and execute the command:

  • iRecovery.exe –s

Here is a screenshot of the process:

iRecovery Command Prompt

Step 4: After you execute the command, iRecovery will detect your iPhone and will show device information.

Step 5: Execute following commands one by one in Command Prompt / Terminal Shell:

  • setenv auto-boot true
  • saveenv
  • fsboot

Step 6: Unplug your iPhone and restart your iPhone after switching it off.

Step 7: Once iPhone is on again, connect it with computer and load the OS 3.1.3 firmware using iTunes.

If you need help with loading custom IPSW file using iTunes, read our simple guide on how to load custom IPSW file using iTunes.

Same process can be applied to downgrading to any other firmware version including 3.1.2. However if you have iPhone 3GS, you can only downgrade to iPhone 3.1.3 unless you had a saved version of ECID files for earlier version. See how to grab ECID of iPhone 3GS.

Loved the iPhone OS 4.0 theme? If you couldn’t update your iPhone OS 3.1.3 to OS 4.0 and still want to have the cool theme that appeared as the default theme for iPhone OS 4.0, you can download it to jailbroken iPhone. This theme is developed by Roy Piper and can be downloaded from Cydia. To download and install the official iPhone OS 4.0 theme on iPhone 3.1.3 or older, simply run Cydia and search for “iPhone OS 4 theme”. Install the theme and activate it from Winterboard.

iPhone OS 4.0 Theme

This theme includes the official iPhone OS 4.0 wallpaper, new dock and new calculator icon from iPhone 4.0. Theme is available in ModMyi repo under Cydia.

Multitasking on iPod Touch 2G on OS 4.0 Jailbroken

On April 18, 2010, in Hacks, by TechAdmin

Steve Jobs said NO to multitasking on iPhone and iPod Touch 2G on iPhone OS 4.0 but a jailbreak into OS 4.0 had made it possible. iH8sn0w has uploaded a video showing iPod Touch on OS 4.0 being able to perform multitasking. iH8sn0w has further hinted the availability of a public jailbreak for iPhone OS 4.0 some time soon. Here is the video:

Earlier we had Veency running on iPhone 4.0 and a jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 video by iH8sn0w. So, a public release of jailbreak OS 4,0 may be around the corner.

Update: As promised, redsn0w 0.9.5 B5 has been released that lets you jailbreak iPod Touch 2G & iPhone 3G on iOS 4.

We have had many pieces of proof of iPhone OS 4.0 jailbreak yet there is no release date of iPhone 4.0 jailbreak is given by any of those working on the jailbreak. iH8sn0w’s latest post shows why it is so, he’s held following reasons responsible for not releasing jailbreak for iPhone OS 4.0:

  1. iPhone OS 4 jailbreak can NOT restore on a PC, only a Mac can. There is no way to make it run on a PC.
  2. Jailbreak patch for OS 4 is very very buggy.
  3. iPhone OS 4.0 meant to be used by developers for testing new APIs.
  4. iPhone OS 4.0 has 58% success restore rate.
  5. It would promote more piracy. Meaning users would illegally download the ipsw and bypass the UDID trap.

So, that’s why there is no public release of jailbreak for OS 4.0 Beta is out yet, according to iH8sn0w, hmmmm.
