How to Dump / Extract iPod Nano Touch Firmware

For those who want to extract iPod Nano Touch firmware can now do it with a simple guide courtesy James Whelton who earlier did the iPod Nano Springboard hack. This simple guide will allow you to dump the iPod Nano 6th Gen firmware and look into the files.

Extract iPod Nano Touch Firmware

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Download the latest iPod Nano 1.0 firmware: iPod_1.0_36A00403.ipsw

Step 2: Rename iPod_1.0_36A00403.ipsw to iPod_1.0_36A00403.zip and unzip it

Step 3: Download Extract2g, cd to the same folder as files and build it (using themake command in Terminal)

Step 4: In the unzipped Pod_1.0_36A00403 folder you’ll find a file called Firmware.MSE, drag that into the same folder as your built Extract2g file

Step 5: Now in Terminal, while in the same folder, go: ./extract2g  -A Firmware.MSE

Step 6: That will dump the fw files as shown in the screenshot above

James Whelton has managed to jailbreak iPod Nano Touch. Call it the iPod Nano 6th Generation jailbreak or just a hack, James was able to remove apps from the Springboard and add a blank space over there. Here is the video:

It’s important to note that James hasn’t been able to get root access of the device but this hack could lead to possible iPod Nano Touch jailbreak in future. According to James:

iPod Nano hasn’t been “jailbroken” as some sites claim, I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.

What I have also done is figured out a way for the iPod to boot with modified files (eg the SpingBoard Plist), bypassing the procedure it takes to stop this, I hope this will allow us to figure out a way to jailbreak it. I am primarily focusing on exposing some of the (for now) hidden features of the device.

In an earlier update, James writes:

The springboard hack is just the removal of a app and creation of a blank space. Not that amazing, but whats important is the bypass of Nano’s cache comparison, which compares any modded SB file and reverts it if it doesn’t like it, this opens up the possibility of hacking and modding, while not adding bootloaders or any of that fun stuff.

iPod Nano Touch Jailbreak

Let’s see if we would be able to jailbreak iPod Nano Touch 6th generation and what the device could be made to do once someone gets the root access.
