Fix “iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable”

Posted by | Hacks | 3 Comments

While trying to restore to an IPSW, you may encounter the error “iphone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable”. This error pops up while iTunes is trying to connect to the Apple server for verification. Here is the screenshot of the error:

iOS-Restore-Error

This problem is caused when iTunes cannot connect to Apple update server. There could be many reasons for that:

  1. Check your internet connection. You must be connected to internet.
  2. Check your Hosts file:

Windows Users

  • Go to the directory C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc
  • You’ll find a file named “hosts” in there, open it in notepad.
  • Now look for something like “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com”, remove it or replace it with "#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com"
  • Save and close the file. Now try updating again, error should not appear now.

Note: If you have trouble saving to hosts file due to permission problems, you can rename the hosts file to something else and then put the updated file in “etc” folder and rename it to “hosts”.

Mac OS X Users

  • Go to Mac/private/etc directory
  • Find the file named “hosts” in there, open it in text editor (TextEdit).
  • Look for the line “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com”, if it’s there then remove it or replace it with "#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com".
  • Save and close the hosts file and try updating with iTunes again.

This worked out for me. It happens if you’ve used TinyUmbrella in the past on that computer. I had problems updating to iOS 4.2.1 then I figured out that I had backed up my SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1 using TinyUmbrella.

Fix the App is Not Signed iPhone / iPad Error (Code: 0xE8008001)

Posted by | Hacks | 11 Comments

Getting an error saying that the app is not signed while syncing iPhone with your PC? I’ve been facing this error when I purchased some apps in iTunes and when I tried to transfer apps to the iPhone, it showed the error message like “Application was not installed on the iPhone because it is not signed. I tried almost everything from clearing the iTunes data to de-authorizing and then re-authorizing my PC. Nothing seemed to work though. I then noticed the recent changes that I made to the PC and figured it out.

The problem is most likely caused by the Firewall that you may have installed. In my case, it was ZoneAlarm that was not letting the app to sync with iPhone. I uninstalled the ZoneAlarm and it worked well. I was able to transfer all the apps without facing any error.

So, try tweaking or uninstalling your Firewall if you get to see “app is not signed” error.

Spirit Jailbreak, iPad & iPhone Users and iTunes 9.2

Posted by | Hacks | No Comments

Apple has just officially released iTunes 9.2 for Windows and Mac. iTunes 9.2 is required to install iOS4 however it may not be safe for those who have been using spirit jailbreak. Here are some quick facts with respect to iPad and iTunes 9.2:

  • iPad users who have already had spirit jailbreak may update to iTunes 9.2. It will sync okay. However it is still recommended to stay away from iTunes 9.2.
  • iPad users who plan to jailbreak iPad with Spirit, should not update to iTunes 9.2 as they will unable to load custom IPSW into iPad with iTunes 9.2 and will be caught in boot loop.
  • iPhone users who plan to jailbreak iOS4 either with PwnageTool Bundles or with redsn0w 0.9.5 B5 can safely update to iTunes 9.2 and can jailbreak iOS4.
  • While updating to iOS4, you should be aware of the fact that it will update your baseband (modem firmware) hence you won’t be able to unlock your device neither with blacksn0w nor with ultrasn0w. Mac users can still update to iOS4 while preserving their baseband using PwnageTool jailbreak for iOS4. There is no such solution for Windows users as yet.

Apple iTunes Connect Mobile app for Developers Released

Posted by | News | No Comments

Apple has just released iTunes Connect Mobile app for developers. It lets app store developers to view statistics of their apps in the app store. It will be pretty useful for developers, enabling them to see number of sales/downloads of their apps from the app store. Additionally, it also shows a graph showing the performance of apps over time. Graph can show progress by day, week or month.

Apple iTunes Connect Mobile app

iTunes Connect Mobile app will be handy especially in case of free apps considering that there’s no way to calculate number of downloads for an app in the app store at the moment. Paid app sales could already be tracked by amount of revenue made but this app will give much easy way to developers to evaluate performance of their apps. iTunes Connect Mobile will list all the apps made by you and will show their performance hence will work as app developers’ dashboard.

iTunes Connect Mobile is available for FREE download from AppStore, follow this link.
