As CyanogenMod 7 nightly build is available for download, you can install CM 7 on Nexus S with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Since it’s not at RC stage, if you install CyanogenMod 7 on Nexus S it might have some bugs but there are none known as for now. Here’s the guide to help you install CM7 on Gingerbread powered Google Nexus S:

How to Install CM7 on Nexus S

Before you Begin:

Step 0: Copy both of downloaded files (CM7 and Google Apps) to the root of your SD Card.

Step 1: Root Nexus S

Step 2: Open Android Market on Nexus S

Step 3: Search for ROM Manager and install it

Step 4: Launch ROM Manager and tap on ClockworkMod Recovery to install it

Step 5: Once ClockworkMod is installed, tap on Flash ROM from SD Card in ROM Manager

Step 6: Scroll down and search for CM7 zip file that you placed on root of your SD Card.

Step 7: Select “Make a backup” and “Wipe Cache” options and tap on OK.

Your Nexus S will now automatically boot in recovery to install the ROM. Once process is finished, your phone will reboot. That’s it!

Before you Begin:

Step 1: Download Superboot

Step 2: Extract the downloaded zip file in a directory

Step 3: Put Nexus S in bootloader mode (How to: Turn off the phone, then press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons together to start in bootloader mode).

Step 4: Get the root access

Root Nexus S on Windows

Double-click install-superboot-windows.bat

Root Nexus S Mac OS X

  • Open Terminal
  • In Terminal, move to the directory where you’ve extracted the files
  • Type: chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh
  • Type: ./install-superboot-mac.sh
  • Now wait for process to complete

Root Nexus S Linux / Ubuntu

  • Open Terminal
  • In Terminal, move to the directory where you’ve extracted the files
  • Type: chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh
  • Type: ./install-superboot-linux.sh
  • Now wait for process to complete

Once the process completes, you will have rooted Nexus S. Enjoy!

Step 1: Turn off Nexus S

Step 2: Press and hold Volume Up button

Step 3: Press Power button while still holding the Volume button

How to: Manually Update Nexus S to Gingerbread GRH78

Android 2.3 Gingerbread build GRH78 OTA for Nexus S is being rolled out. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can manually update Nexus S to GRH78 build. Here’s how to:

Step 1: Download Gingerbread GRH78: GRH78-from-GRH55.a71a2082.zip.

Step 2: Rename the downloaded file to “update.zip”.

Step 3: Place the update.zip file onto the root of your SD card.

Step 4: Unplug your phone from computer then turn the phone off.

Step 5: Start Nexus S in the bootloader mode. How to: Press and hold the volume up button + Power button.

Note: Once in bootloader mode, you can navigate up and down with Volume + & – keys and select an option with Power button.

Step 6:  Select “Recovery” option from the screen to enter Recovery Mode.

Step 7: Once see a red triangle on the screen, press Volume up + Power button again.

Step 8: Select the option to update (Apply update.zip) to start updating.

That’s it. Your Nexus S will be updated to GRH78.

Samsung and Google have released Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread GRH78 OTA update for Nexus S handsets. It updates Gingerbread build from GRH55 to GRH78 for Nexus S and brings some bug fixes and updates the Maps to latest.

Gingerbread OTA Nexus S update comes a week after the handset was released in the US. The patch is 1.9 MB in size and is being rolled out now. If you’re a Nexus S owner, you can update to Android 2.3.1 GRH78.

Shortly after Android 2.3 Gingerbread source code was released, folks at XDA have already ported Gingerbread on Samsung Galaxy S. In technical terms, Nexus S kernel’s been ported onto Galaxy S. This port is pretty smooth but as with many unofficial ports, Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Galaxy S lacks some features like voice, Wi-Fi and GPS don’t work as yet. Here’s the video:

How to Root Nexus S (Unlocking Nexus S Bootloader)

  1. Switch the phone off
  2. Hold down volume up + power to get Nexus S in Standard Recovery Mode
  3. On your computer, open command prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac OS X)
  4. Type ‘fastboot devices’ (without quotes always) to see if your phone is connected via USB
  5. Type ‘adb reboot bootloader’
  6. Type ‘fastboot oem unlock’
  7. Use volume keys to select ‘yes, unlock bootloader’
  8. Use power button to select option
  9. Done! Nexus S bootloader is unlocked
