Sony has just released PS3 3.56 firmware for PlayStation 3 consoles. This updated reportedly fixes PS3 3.55 jailbreak exploit. So if you upgrade to PS3 firmware 3.56, you’ll lose your jailbreak. It is, however, required to update your firmware if you want to access PSN (PlayStation Network) or PlayStation Store.

Updating PlayStation to OFW 3.56

If you’re running custom firmware on PS3, you should NOT update to firmware 3.56 before you restore to OFW 3.55. In simple words, if you want to upgrade to 3.56:

Wipe all data from HDD

Restore PlayStation 3 to OFW 3.55

Update to 3.56 firmware

If you don’t follow this route, you may end up bricking your PS3.

How to Install Custom Packages on PS3 (PlayStation 3)

After you jailbreak PS3 3.55, you’d be able to install custom packages on PlayStation 3 console. Here is a simple guide that will help you in process:

What you need:

Step 1: Plug USB stick into the computer

Step 2: Put the downloaded test.pkg into the root of the USB Drive

Step 3: Plug that USB into the PS3 console

Step 4: Navigate to the Game Tab

Step 5: Select Install Package Files

Step 6: Select the test.pkg

Step 7: After it installs you will find the test package from geohot installed below the Install Package Files folder

How to Jailbreak PS3 3.55 Firmware

Want to jailbreak PS3 3.55 firmware? GeoHot has put up a tool that can make it happen for you. Here is a step by step guide on how to jailbreak 3.55 firmware on PlayStation 3.

Jailbreak PS3 3.55

What you need:

Step 1: Plug USB into the computer

Step 2: In root of the USB … Create a folder: PS3

Step 3: Create another folder inside the PS3 folder, name it: UPDATE

Step 4: Extract the downloaded Jailbreak.zip, copy PS3UPDAT.PUP file to UPDATE folder on USB

Step 5: Now plug that USB stick into the PS3 Console

Step 6: Go to Settings Tab and select System Update

Step 7: Then select: Update via Storage Media. It will detect the Version 3.55-jb .. press OK.

Step 8: Accept Conditions and Install Update

Step 9: This will update your PS3, console will beep 4 times and will shut down.

Step 10: Turn your PS3 on. Use the Console’s power on, instead of the controller to turn it on.

That’s all you got to do. PS3 3.55 jailbreak is now complete, enjoy!

Fail0verflow to Jailbreak PS3 3.55 Firmware Revealed [Video]

Fail0verflow can possibly jailbreak PS3 3.55 firmware and might as well have the tendency to jailbreak PlayStation 3 upcoming firmware updates. Talking at at 27th Chaos Communication Congress, members of Fail0verflow declared Sony’s security as Epic Fail and showed how dongle-less jailbreak could be achieved. Here is the video:

Fail0verflow is keen to develop the tools that will jailbreak PS3 3.55 and beyond and will be easy to use. You can expect the tools to release in a month or so. As per their twitter updates:

fail0verflow is the name of our ‘group’. We are a bunch of curious hackers who have been working on a bunch of things over the last 3 years.

we only started looking at the ps3 after otheros was killed.

Note: we won’t be working long-term on CFW or similar. We’ll release tools and a PoC, someone else can take over. The fun part is done ;)

PS3 Mod – How to Jailbreak PlayStation 3 with PS Jailbreak USB Modchip

PlayStation jailbreak was announced couple of days ago. Now you can jailbreak PlayStation 3 with USB Modchip. Here are step by step on how to jailbreak PS3:

Before You Begin:

  • Make sure you have PlayStation 3 with firmware 3.41 or above.
  • You will also need original disc of any PS3 game that you want to backup.
  • Purchase PS Jailbreak USB Modchip from ChipSpain or OzModChip.
  • Download Backup Manager file for PlayStation 3 and put that file on an external storage device USB / HDD.

How to Jailbreak PlayStation 3

Step 1: Make sure there’s no disc in the Blu-Ray and power of PlayStation console.

  • For PS3 Slim: Remove power chord before you plug in the USB.
  • For PS3 Fat: Turn off from the Power switch.

Step 2: Plug the USB Modchip into the console then turn the console on.

Step 3: After putting console on, immediately press Eject button.

Now notice the 2 LEDs on the USB, you should see two LEDs turned on. Once loading is complete, LED will turn either red or green.

Green LED means that PS Jailbreak was loaded successfully.

Red LED indicates an error loading the Jailbreak. If there’s red light, repeat steps 1 to 3 and make sure you press the Eject button immediately after turning the device on.

Once you see the green light:

Step 4: Plug the external USB storage device (USB / HDD) that contains the Backup Manager file.

Step 5: Now, from Game Menu, select “Install Package Files”, then select manager.pkg to install it.

Step 6: Once manager.pkg completes loading, new application “Backup Manager” will appear in Game Menu.

Step 7: Run the Backup Manager app that you just installed.

Step 8: Insert a game in optical drive and press “O”. You’ll be asked where to create the backup, on the internal drive or on external.

Step 9: To play the game from the backup:

  • Insert original game disc (just to emulate the loading process)
  • Run Backup Manager app
  • Press “X” to play the selected game from the backup. It will take you back in Game Menu.

Step 10: You will see the backed up game there in Game Menu. Run it! You wouldn’t need to insert the original disc.

Note: Every time you need to run the game, make sure PS Jailbreak USB Modchip is connected to the console all the time.

Who would’ve imagined that we’d get to jailbreak PlayStation 3 (PS3) console to allow games to run without you needing to insert the Original Disc. USB Modchip hack for PS3 does just that by allowing you to dump your PS3 games on any disc whether internal or external. The hack looks quite legit so we can all rejoice with possibility to have PS3 jailbreak at our disposal soon. Here is the video:
