BlackBerry PlayBook Android Apps

A trusted source close BGR has revealed that there’s a possibility of Android Apps on BlackBerry Playbook. This sounds weird but you could actually be able to run Android Apps on PlayBook, upcoming tablet from RIM.

RIM’s PlayBook will run on QNX OS and will feature a Java Virtual Machine. It’s undecided which JVM RIM will opt for, however there are rumors that RIM is considering Dalvik virtual machine. It should be noted that Google’s Android OS also uses Dalvik. So BlackBerry PlayBook will be able to run every Android App.

Initially touted as BlackPad, PlayBook was announced in September 2010 at DevCon and a video promo of BlackBerry PlayBook was also released that hinted at a worthy iPad competitor. Let’s see if RIM’s tablet actually runs Android Apps, that would be big news in Tablets market.

RIM Black Pad may soon be reality. If whois information is to be believed, RIM have taken control of BlackPad.com and its likely to be used as homepage for BlackBerry Tablet (BlackPad). There have already been rumors that RIM may be joining the “pad bandwagon” with its very own iPad-like BlackPad tablet. Android marketshare experienced a big leap as it grew from 9% in February 2010 to 13% in May. This was revealed by the statistics report issued by comScore. Here is head to head comparison:

  Share (%) of Smartphone Subscribers
OS Feb 2010 May 2010 Change
RIM BlackBerry 42.1% 41.7% -0.4
Apple iOS 25.4% 24.4% -1.0
Windows Mobile 15.1% 13.2% -1.9
Google Android 9.0% 13.0% +4.0
Palm OS 5.4% 4.8% -0.6

(Stats via PRNewsWire)

RIM BlackBerry

Things look good for RIM at the moment as it continues to dominate the market with 42% marketshare. With BlackBerry 6.0 around the corner and release of devices like BlackBerry 9800 RIM may continue its steady growth.

Apple iOS

Apple marketshare dropped from March to May but it is expected to rise with release of iOS4 and considering the phenomenal success of iPhone 4. So, Apple will continue to be the biggest threat to RIM domination in US smartphone market.

Windows Mobile

Microsoft Windows Mobile seems like the one that has lost the most among all. Main reason could be because there are no new devices being introduced. New Windows Phone 7 smartphones are expected to arrive in October this year. HTC Mozart could be among the first devices to come with WP7.

Google Android

Google Android experienced record growth from March to May and it will continue to grow due to range of handsets it continues to features on. From HTC EVO 4G to Samsung Galaxy S and Motorola Droid X, all are worthy competitors to Apple iPhone 4. Android also features on low and mid range smartphones like Samsung Intercept which gives it great advantage on comparatively expensive Apple iPhone and RIM BlackBerry. Palm OS

Future growth of Palm OS is still in question after HP took it over. However, it has managed not to fall much and has maintained its marketshare well compared to iPhone and Windows Mobile.

So, BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the next big thing coming from RIM? This Touch Slider mobile has earlier been dubbed as BlackBerry Bold 9800. Guys at CrackBerry have got enough tips to conclude that BlackBerry Torch could be the new name of upcoming 9800 mobile phone from RIM that will be featuring BlackBerry OS 6.0 (introduced at WEC 2010), and boost the power of touch as well as slider based QWERTY keyboard. A sneak into whois details of the domain BlackBerryTorch.com shows RIM as the domain owner so it is very likely that this rumor may be correct. We are yet to see the confirmation yet though. Here are some images of BlackBerry Bold 9800 (that may now be termed as Torch 9800) that leaked not so long ago:
