Next userland jailbreak for iOS 4.1 could possibly jailbreak iPod Touch 4G as well. The exploits, reportedly, in possession of comex might work for iPod Touch 4G jailbreak as the newly launched iTouch 4G will run iOS 4.1 which could be jailbreakable with a tool like JailbreakMe or a spirit-like tool. It’s not certain though as it’s a new hardware and finding exploits might be difficult. There’s a hope though but it’s something that time will tell. As for now, iOS 4.0.2 is not jailbreakable as it includes the fix to the security hole in Safari browser that was used by JailbreakMe.

Rejoice jailbreakers, you could soon get to jailbreak iOS 4.1. Comex, the developer behind Spirit Jailbreak and JailbreakMe tools is in possession of the userland exploit that will jailbreak iOS 4.1. So, you would be able to jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G. It could possibly jailbreak iPod Touch 4G as well. The plans for future userland jailbreak were revealed by MuscleNerd while replying to a tweet. MusclNerd said:
@TechXero it’ll be userland JB if @comex can pull trifecta. Else, wait for new HW cycle (also remember: hole!=exploit)
in reply to:
@MuscleNerd I know tons already asked this but is the iOS4.1 gonna be a userland jailbreak as usual or will redsn0w be making a comeback?
There is no release date as expected but it could be soon after iOS 4.1 release goes public in couple of days. Currently iOS 4.1 GM is available to developers for download.
Comex’s Spirit jailbreak release may be around the corner and it will be capable to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 and iOS4. Supported devices for jailbreak are iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G, plus iPod Touch. Recent tweets from comex, the man behind Spirit jailbreak, hint the release of iOS 4.0.1 jailbreak is imminent. Here are the tweets:
I’m not waiting for 4.1 so I hope everyone has SHSH blobs saved. :p
SHSH blobs for 4.0.1 or 4.0 are fine; AFAIK there are no substantive differences except the bars
To be clear: if I don’t run into problems, it will work on 4.0 or 4.0.1. No need to update to 4.0.1. SHSH blobs for either are fine.
It sounds like the countdown, 3 …. 2 …. 1 …. Spirit!! No?
Excited? Hell yeah!
Oh and one last thing, save your iOS 4.0.1 SHSH Blobs right now, for sake of your jailbroken iPhone/iPod/iPad.
A recent tweet from MuscleNerd indicates that Spirit jailbreak release may just be around the corner. And it will jailbreak iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) and will also work for iPhone 4 jailbreak. Previous release of Spirit was able to jailbreak iPad as well as iPhone and iPod Touch (all devices). Same is expected with new release of Spirit as it will be yet another userland jailbreak.
We can expect a release soon and there will finally be a solution for iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) users. Reportedly, MuscleNerd and planetbeing are already working on iPhone 4 unlock solution but that may take some time. There’s plenty of hope though, for new bootrom users as well as for those with iPhone 4, jailbreak and unlock solutions are in the pipeline.
Currently iPhone 3GS new bootrom jailbreak on iOS4 is possible for those who have saved their 3.1.2 SHSH blobs. That requires you to go through a rather tricky process. If you fulfill the requirements, you can read our guides for Windows and Mac.
However, we recommend you to wait for Spirit jailbreak for iOS 4. Once there, iPhone 3GS users would be able to unlock their devices right away with ultrasn0w 0.93 while iPhone 4 users would still have to wait for an unlock.
Spirit jailbreak for iPhone 4 moved an inch closer to iPhone 4 jailbreak when iPhone hackers PlanetBeing of iDroid fame & chpwn used fellow comex’s code to gain root access on iPhone 4. Here is what PlanetBeing had to say:
Think I’m the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex’s code (since he has no iPhone 4).
It should be noted that gaining root access on a device is considered an important landmark in jailbreak or root the device. Such is the importance of this that MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team congratulated comex, chpwn and planetbeing for their progress to jailbreak iPhone 4. MuscleNerd also shared screenshots showing root access of iPhone 4, here they are:

iPhone 4 Root Access
As for the release date of spirit jailbreak for iPhone 4, planetbeing has made it clear that there is much to be done before they could release it.
Don’t want to speak for @comex, but afaik no one has breathed a word about release date and what we have right now is nowhere ready.
So we can hope for Spirit userland iPhone 4 jailbreak release some time, not so soon. Anyways, iPhone 3.1.3 and iPad (iOS 3.2) users can use the updated spirit jailbreak that is compatible with iTunes 9.2.
Apple has just officially released iTunes 9.2 for Windows and Mac. iTunes 9.2 is required to install iOS4 however it may not be safe for those who have been using spirit jailbreak. Here are some quick facts with respect to iPad and iTunes 9.2:
- iPad users who have already had spirit jailbreak may update to iTunes 9.2. It will sync okay. However it is still recommended to stay away from iTunes 9.2.
- iPad users who plan to jailbreak iPad with Spirit, should not update to iTunes 9.2 as they will unable to load custom IPSW into iPad with iTunes 9.2 and will be caught in boot loop.
- iPhone users who plan to jailbreak iOS4 either with PwnageTool Bundles or with redsn0w 0.9.5 B5 can safely update to iTunes 9.2 and can jailbreak iOS4.
- While updating to iOS4, you should be aware of the fact that it will update your baseband (modem firmware) hence you won’t be able to unlock your device neither with blacksn0w nor with ultrasn0w. Mac users can still update to iOS4 while preserving their baseband using PwnageTool jailbreak for iOS4. There is no such solution for Windows users as yet.
Spirit jailbreak Linux version is now available for download that can run on any flavor of Linux including Ubuntu. P0sixninja, the developer who is also working on Greenpois0n jailbreak for iPad, has managed to port Spirit jailbreak on Linux. Earlier we had Spirit Jailbreak on Windows and Mac.
You can download Spirit Jailbreak for Linux/Ubuntu from link given below:
We all know that Spirit Jailbreak had some bugs that needed tweaking. In some cases, Spirit will give you iTunes error saying “Spirit requires iTunes 9 to Function” despite the fact that you had iTunes 9.x installed. There have been solutions as well. Spirit Fixer by Kirma has been popular solution and effective one as well. However some users had problems with Spirit Fixer as it failed to resolve their iTunes error. Kirma has released a new version (v 1.0.2) with name iFixer. New release works for Blackra1n as well as with Spirit.
Here is the video released by Kirma:
iFixer 1.0.2 adds support for all OS languages and automatically detects the language. Behind the scenes, iFixer copies iTunesMobileDevice.dll to iTunesMobileDevice2.dll.
If iFixer 1.0.2 doesn’t work for you, you may want to go the manual route. See our step by step instructions to fix Spirit iTunes error manually.
Apple iPad didn’t come with support for multitasking nor did it allow expandable storage via USB. However, such things can be achieved on jailbroken iPad. Who would have imagined that iPad’s camera connection kit could be used to attach external HDD, USB headset and, possibly, other external devices or accessories via USB. Max Shay is the man of the moment who’s converted Apple’s official camera kit into a port for external Hard Drives. He’s posted a video on how to mount external HFS or FAT32 drive to your iPad. Before you go on to watch the video, you will need following to accomplish this:
- A jailbroken iPad (See how to jailbreak iPad using Spirit Jailbreak)
- Official Camera Connection Kit for iPad
- Split USB Cable
- A terminal like MacBook to execute commands on iPad
Here is the video:

I have just received this interesting comment on the post about using Spirit Fixer to fix Spirit iTunes error from AlexRM*iTA* who’s been facing the same “Spirit Requires iTunes 9 to function error”. According to Alex, Spirit Fixer didn’t work for him so he had to figure out a solution by himself. His comment was long enough so I thought to create a new post for it. Here is what Alex from Italy has to say:
Hi guyz, I had the same problem, and I can say NONE of the trickz around works! Then I discovered THE SOLUTION by myself. I hope it could help you solving this damned issue!!!
Here is the guide:
1) Copy spirit.exe inside this folder: C:\Program files\Common files\Apple\Apple Application Support\ and run from here. Now the software should work
.
If it didn’t work do as follow:
- Uninstall in this order: Itunes, Quicktime, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update;
- Restart Windows;
- (OPTIONAL – EXPERT ONLY) Open regedit and delete any traces regarding the word “apple” in the registry of windows;
- Do an advanced search in explorer (hidden and system files must be NOT HIDDEN) typing the word Apple in the search box and deletes ALL the installed Apple folders under All Users and “YOUR ACCOUNT NAME” User; have a look in the Program files Itunes folder, if it still there delete it.
- Delete or rename Itunes folder in Music folder;
- Restart Windows;
- Download Itunes v.9.0.3 (tested) and install the package;
- Plug your iPhone, let itunes found the drivers and your iPhone, then exit from itunes;
- Copy Spirit in the already mentioned folder, here: C:\Program files\Common files\Apple\Apple Application Support\
- ENJOY YOUR NEW JAILBREAKED IPHONE
Thank me if it works, if not…good luck!
