Nokia’s FREE Turn by Turn Navigation Service via Ovi Maps – N97 is Left Out

Posted by | Mobiles | One Comment

This must be the much awaited news for all Nokia fans out there. Nokia has announced availability of its feature rich app Ovi Maps, supporting turn by turn navigation across globe, as FREE download from Nokia Maps. Turn by turn navigation service was previously a premium service and users had to pay for that. This move seems to be a response to free navigation service offered by Google in Android OS 2.0. Where Google’s navigation service is network intensive and requires a powerful data connection to work, Ovi Maps doesn’t require a network connection; it rather runs from your phone where maps are downloaded as you navigate. Another great offering of Ovi Maps is support for landmarks. Nokia’s navigation service supports 3D landmarks, and well over 6000 landmarks have been included to start with.

As per Nokia, all upcoming mobile phones with Symbian S60 OS will support Ovi Maps. Of the current products available in market, 10 qualify for Ovi Maps including:

  • Nokia N97 Mini
  • Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
  • Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition
  • Nokia E52
  • Nokia E55
  • Nokia E72
  • Nokia 5230
  • Nokia 6710 Navigator
  • Nokia 6730 classic
  • Nokia X6

Surprisingly though, as you could see in the list, Nokia N97 has been left out. Even more surprising is that you could have Ovi Maps on Nokia N97 Mini but not on Nokia N97. However we might get news regarding Nokia N97 soon. But for now, the buzz around availability of Nokia Ovi Maps for N97 will bypass the talk about Nokia’s just introduced free navigation service for current and upcoming handsets.
