Twitter Promoted Accounts Launched

On October 4, 2010, in News, Social Media, by TechAdmin

Twitter has just launched the Promoted Accounts. The newly launched service will allow Twitter users to get more followers. Promoted Accounts uses the same algorithm as does the “Who to follow” service.

Here is the official word from Twitter:

Today, we’re entering a new phase in our efforts. We are launching Promoted Accounts, a new ad product that gives added value to Twitter users. We will also make our Promoted Products available through our partners for the first time.

We’re launching Promoted Accounts as part of “Suggestions for You”, which suggests accounts that people don’t currently follow and may find interesting. Promoted Accounts helps introduce an even wider variety of accounts people may enjoy.

Promoted Accounts are suggested based on a user’s public list of whom they follow. When an advertiser promotes an account, Twitter’s algorithm looks at that account’s followers and determines other accounts that those users tend to follow. If a user follows some of those accounts, but not the advertiser’s account, then Twitter may recommend the advertiser’s Promoted Account to that user. For example, a lot of people who follow several gaming-related accounts also follow @xbox. If someone follows gaming-related accounts, but not @xbox, Twitter may recommend @xbox to that person.

This looks like a good move as Twitter continues its efforts to monetize better.

Push Notifications on Twitter for iPhone

Push Notifications on Twitter for iPhone

Push notifications for Twitter for iPhone will soon go underway. Twitter is reportedly testing push notifications internally while the option to enable push notifications is also available for users running iOS 4.1 GM on iPhone. According to Twitter:

We’ve been testing push notifications internally. When we launched Twitter for iPad, there was a configuration error that caused us to offer push messages to a small set of users. We’ve stopped sending push messages, but users may see an option to turn on push until we release an updated version of the app. So, push isn’t ready yet but we look forward to rolling this out soon.

It’s still not clear that push notifications will be for mentions and DMs or will there be options to choose from larger set of options.

Twitter's Location Mapping ServiceTwitter has just added Tweet your location feature to Twitter.com. This feature will attach a small icon with the tweets clicking on which it will open the small view based on Google Maps showing the location from where that tweet was sent. With this move, Twitter is now competing directly with FourSquare and Gowalla who have been providing location sharing services for quite a while now. This feature is also important because the rival Facebook is all set to launch location sharing features to the website.

Twitter has started rolling out this feature and will soon be available for all users. So, now you can easily share your location with your friends as its attached with every tweet automatically. More updates on that soon.

TweetDeck LogoTweetDeck, one of the popular Twitter clients, has just launched the version 0.33 that has some exciting new features. TweetDeck now comes with support for YouTube which means that you can view YouTube videos right within TweetDeck and don’t have to open the YouTube links in browsers to watch the videos. There’s also support for Posterous, Mobypicture, Twitgoo, and Flickr and images from all these will now open in the preview box. Mobypicture has also been added as image uploading service in addition to TwitPic.

Apart from adding support for new media services, there’s major user interface improvement with addition of column viewer that lets you manage your columns easily. On hover, it shows the status of that specific column and clicking over it takes you to that specific column. It’s very useful feature for professional users who keep track of different hashtags and have quite many columns added in their TweetDeck. You will not have to scroll long way just to check the status of that column it’s been made easy by column viewer. Here is how YouTube videos look on TweetDeck Preview box:

YouTube Videos in TweetDeck

As from now, TweetDeck is using OAuth, the open protocol to share resources, for smarter API usage. This means that TweetDeck can now make up to 350 API calls in an hour, and it can still go beyond that.

Here is the detailed official video showing enhancements in TweetDeck version 0.33:

Twitter Forcing Some Users to Change Passwords

On February 2, 2010, in Social Media, by TechAdmin

Twitter Password ResetWe’ve just got a note from a user indicating an email from Twitter asking user to reset their password. Reason for changing user password is said to be the concerns over user passwords being compromised due to a phishing attack that reportedly tool place off twitter. While Twitter hasn’t yet responded to it officially, there’s something common among all twitter accounts that got password reset messages. All these accounts got spammy looking mentions (@targetusername) from different users (@SoniaBlackbuq in one case), messages read like:

If you are an artist or listen to music you should use http://tinyurl.com/twitmuzik to upload your music using your twitter account

Get paid on twitter with your account doing surveys at http://tinyurl.com/twittersurveys

Links lead to twtsurveys.com and twtmuzik.net. Both sites allow sign up using Twitter. twtsurveys.com allows twitter users to “earn money” and twtmuzik.net allows users to upload and share their music on Twitter. Both websites are registered recently and some users also seem to be using them. Although the activities of these sites look suspicious, it is still NOT conformed if that was the actual cause behind Twitter’s password reset request to some users.

Here is how the original email from Twitter reads:

Due to concern that your account may have been compromised in a phishing attack that took place off-Twitter, your password was reset. Please create a new password by opening this link in your browser:

http://twitter.com/account/password_reset?email=useremail@usermail.com&token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This will reset your password. Remember to choose a strong password that is a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not reuse your old password.

As a reminder, you should be extraordinarily suspicious of any third party that offers to artificially inflate your follower count. We do not endorse any of these sites.

Please make sure to:

  • Scan your computers for viruses / malware, especially if unauthorized tweets continue to be posted in your accounts even after you’ve changed the password.
  • Check the Connections page at http://twitter.com/account/connections and revoke the access privileges of any third party applications that you do not recognize.
  • Avoid providing your username and/or e-mail and password to untrusted third-party sites.
  • Remove any updates that you did not post personally; leaving these updates can result in your account being re-suspended.

You can also visit our help page for hacked or compromised accounts.
