Step 3: In next step, you’ll get following options to choose from:

  • Baseband Preservation Mode – Choose this if you rely on carrier unlock and want to unlock iOS 4.2.1
  • Simple Mode – Recommended for basic users who just want untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak
  • Expert Mode – Recommended for advanced users

Choose the one that suits you and then click on “Next” button.

Since most of sn0wbreeze users, we assume, will be those who want to preserve their baseband, we’ll be going ahead with sn0wbreeze baseband preservation mode.

Step 4: That’s all from your end. You can either sit back and watch sn0wbreeze jailbreak process or can play PacMan in the meantime.

Want to activate iPhone 4 without SIM? Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) lets you activate iOS 4.2.1 and 4.1 without stock SIM. It works well to activate iPhone 3GS and 3G as well. Although recently released PwnageTool 4.1.3 and redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 5 along with ultrasn0w 1.2 can take care of iOS 4.2.1 unlock on iPhone 3GS and 3G, you may have to face battery drain issues. SAM will help you minimize the battery drain problems, especially with 3G networks. Here is simple step by step guide that will help you activate iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G with SAM:

Step 1: Restore

Restore to iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 firmware (if you haven’t already).

Step 2: Jailbreak

Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 4 or PwnageTool. Jailbreak iPhone 4 4.1 with Limera1n, Greenpois0n tool.

Step 3: Add Repo http://repo.bingner.com in Cydia

  1. Open Cydia, go to “Manage” tab and tap on “Sources”.
  2. Tap on “Edit”, then hit “Add”, a prompt should appear asking “Enter Cydia/APT URL”.
  3. Enter http://repo.bingner.com/ and hit “Add Source”, then tap on “Return to Cydia”.

SAM add repo

Step 4: Install SAM and SAMPrefs

  • After adding the repo, open it from Sources. You’ll see following:

SAM and SAMPrefs

    • SAM
    • SAMPrefs
  • Install both one by one, SAM as well as SAMPrefs.

Subscriber Artificial Module

Step 5: Deactivate iPhone

Run redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 6 and select the option “Deactivate iPhone”

Deactivate iPhone with redsn0w 0.9.6 b6

Alternatively, you can install OpenSSH and run stockify to deactivate. Redsn0w is easier of both though.

Step 5: Activate iPhone without SIM

  • Go to Settings > SAM and tap on “De-Activate iPhone”.
  • Now you can Activate with iTunes.
  • If you get invalid SIM message in iTunes, you’ll need to manually select the carrier to activate.

iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w 1.2 works well to unlock iPhone 3GS & 3G 4.2.1 if they’re on baseband 06.15.00. You should jailbreak 4.2.1 & update 05.14.02 or 05.15.04 to 06.15.00 baseband in order to get iOS 4.2.1 unlock for 3G and 3GS iPhone versions. We’ve already posted a PwnageTool tutorial for those who want to use PwnageTool 4.1.3 (Mac only). Here is our guide for those Windows and Mac users who want to use redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 5 to jailbreak and update iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband to 06.15.00:

Before you Begin:

Download iOS 4.2.1 firmware and update iPhone to iOS 4.2.1

Download Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 5 [Windows | Mac]

Step 1: Launch Redsn0w, click on “Browse” and select the downloaded iOS 4.2.1.

11-redsn0w-browse-firmware

Step 2: 3GS users, Redsn0w will show a dialog box asking if you have new bootrom or old one. Click “Yes” if you have new bootrom iPhone 3GS and click “No” if you have old bootrom version.

12-redsn0w-new-bootrom

Step 3: Redsn0w will show the following options:

  • Install Cydia
  • Install custom bundle
  • Install iPad baseband
  • Just boot tethered right now
  • Just enter pwned DFU mode right now

Select “Install Cydia”, that’s obvious of all. Also select “Install iPad baseband” if (and only if) you want to unlock iPhone 3GS or 3G 4.2.1 iOS with ultrasn0w 1.2.

14-redsn0w-options

Be sure to read the warning that redsn0w shows when you check the “Install iPad baseband” checkbox.

Step 4: In next step, connect your device to computer while it’s turned off. Then click “Next”. Be ready to perform some quick actions to enter DFU mode.

Step 5: Enter DFU mode, follow on-screen instructions that redsn0w shows.

15-redsn0w-dfu-mode

Soon as your device gets into DFU mode, redsn0w will begin the jailbreak process and will also update 05.15.04 to 06.15.00 baseband in the process.

iPhone 3GS, 3G Unlock iOS 4.2.1

After jailbreaking and updating the baseband, iPhone 3G and 3GS users can follow our guide on how to unlock iOS 4.2.1 with ultrasn0w 1.2.

Ultrasn0w 1.2 unlock is now available in Cydia. It comes with bit of twist as it can unlock iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 and iPhone 3G 4.2.1 but can’t unlock 05.15.04 or 05.14.02 baseband. As a workaround, PwnageTool 4.1.3 lets you update iPhone 3GS, 3G to 06.15.00 baseband. Apparently ultrasn0w 1.2 can unlock 06.15.00 that actually is iPad 3.2.2 baseband. First your baseband is updated and then it’s unlocked, that’s as complex as it sounds. You can unlock your devices anyway, here is the guide:

How to Unlock iPhone 3GS, 3G 4.2.1 iOS

Step 1: Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 and also update baseband to 06.15.00 in the process.

Step 2: Run Cydia from SpringBoard.

Step 3: Tap on “Edit”, then hit “Add”, a prompt should appear asking “Enter Cydia/APT URL”.

Step 4: Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ and hit “Add Source”, then tap on “Return to Cydia”.

Step 5: Once the process completes, search for ultrasn0w 1.2 in Cydia and install it.

Step 6: After installation, reboot your iPhone. That’s it!

Enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

Still wondering whether you should update iPhone 3GS / 3G baseband to 06.15.00? Well, if you want to unlock 05.15.04 or 05.14.02, you have to update to 06.15.00 baseband. The newly released PwnageTool 4.1.3 does this for Mac users. You can jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 with PwnageTool as well as can update your baseband to 06.15.00 to make it unlockable. Here are some facts before you go on to update the baseband:

Compatibility

iPad modem firmware 06.15.00 is compatible with that of iPhone 3G and 3GS. Several of Dev Team members have confirmed that they’re running the iPad baseband on iPhone for some days now and it’s fully compatible.

Risk Involved

If you update to baseband 06.15.00, you will NOT be able to restore to stock firmware and will have to restore to custom IPSW all the time. So continue at your own risk. If you’re confused, read the Dev Team blog.

Your Options

If you rely on software unlock, your only option is to not to update to iOS 4.2.1 (if you haven’t already). If you have updated to iOS 4.2.1 and updated your baseband in the process, there’s no other option for you.

DISCLAIMER: Do this at your own risk.

As expected, unofficial PwnageTool unofficial is here and you can jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3GS (Old Bootrom) using the unofficial PwnageTool release. Earlier, iOS 4.0.2 was jailbroken on iPhone 3G with redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta. Here is the step by step guide to jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 using PwnageTool on Mac:

Before you Begin:

Download required files.

  1. Apple iTunes 9.2.1
  2. Apple iOS 4.0.2 IPSW
  3. Unofficial PwnageTool

For ease of use, place all these tools at same location, preferably on desktop.

Jailbreak iOS 4.02 on iPhone 3GS

Step 1: Launch the downloaded PwnageTool

Step 2: Select your device (iPhone 3GS)

Step 3: A prompt will appear asking : “Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?” Click on “No”. Clicking yes will update your baseband to latest one and you won’t be able to unlock iPhone 3GS unless a tool is released.

Step 4: Let PwnageTool complete building custom IPSW for you. Once done, it will show “ihaz Success” message.

Step 5: Your custom IPSW for iOS 4 is ready. Load custom IPSW file to iPhone 3GS.

Step 6: Now let iTunes do its thing. During the process, your iPhone screen should be showing the progress bar. iPhone will restart once installation is complete.

Unlock iOS 4.0.2

To unlock iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.0.2, you can use ultrasn0w 1.0. Here are the seps:

Step 1: Jailbreak iPhone 4 with JailbreakMe. Once Jailbroken, you will find Cydia on HomeScreen.

Step 2: Open Cydia, go to “Manage” tab and tap on “Sources”.

Step 3: Once in “Sources” tap on “Edit” on top-right side, then hit on “Add”. A window will pop up.

Step 4: Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and hit “Add”.

Step 5: Tap on “Done” on top right corner.

Step 6: Go to “Search” tab in Cydia and search “ultrasn0w”. You should find ultrasn0w in there.

Step 7: Install ultrasn0w (Tap on “Install” on top right corner).

A guide with screenshots is posted here.

Could the process to unlock and jailbreak iPhone be legal? As per new exemptions granted by Library of Congress, the process of unlocking and jailbreaking the iPhone will now be legal. And this does not apply on iPhones alone, users of all other phones will also be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to run the apps that aren’t approved by their vendors.

It’s really big news for jailbreaking community as Apple have always argued that jailbreaking was illegal and it allowed piracy. News comes at a time when Spirit jailbreak for iOS 4.0.1 is around the corner and Dev Team have successfully been able to unlock iPhone 4 and they’re set to release ultrasn0w 0.94 unlock for iPhone 4 soon.

Let’s see how Apple, AT&T and others react.
