How to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 4 5.0, 3GS 5.0

Apple released iOS 5.0 final version today and thanks to limera1n exploit, you can already jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 5.0 iOS and iPhone 3GS 5.0. You will have to preserve baseband of your device while upgrading to iOS 5.0. Here is the step by step guide on how to jailbreak and unlock iOS 5.0 for iPhone 4, 3GS:

Note: This is a tethered jailbreak.

Before you Begin:

Download iTunes 10.5

Download iOS 5.0 firmware for your device

Download Sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 or Redsn0w 0.9.9:

Step 1: Create Custom iOS 5.0 IPSW

Option 1: Use Sn0wbreeze to create iOS 5.0 custom IPSW

Option 2: Using latest redsn0w:

Redsn0w now comes with option to preserve baseband while you upgrade iOS version. To do this:

  1. Launch redsn0w and click on “Extras” button.
  2. Click “Custom IPSW”, then browse and select iOS 5.0 IPSW.
  3. Wait for redsn0w to complete the process.
  4. Your custom IPSW should be ready once the process completes.

Step 2: Load / Restore iOS 5.0 Custom IPSW on iPhone

Now you need to restore iPhone to custom iOS 5.0 IPSW that you created in step 1.

  1. Launch iTunes while your device is connected and in DFU mode.
  2. You should see your device in left sidebar in iTunes, select it. You will see the option to restore / update your device.
  3. Press and hold Shift key (Windows) or Alt key (Mac) and click on “Restore”.
  4. Browse and select the custom iOS 5.0 IPSW that you created with sn0wbreeze. It should be on your desktop.
  5. Wait for iTunes to finish the process.

Step 3: Boot Tethered

Using Redsn0w to boot tethered:

  1. Put your device off and connect it to the computer
  2. Click on “Extras” button in Redsn0w
  3. Then click on “Just Boot” button to boot tethered.
  4. Follow instructions to enter DFU mode.
  5. Wait for redsn0w to complete process, your device will boot up in a while.

Step 4: Unlock iPhone 4 5.0, 3GS 5.0 iOS

After jailbreaking, you can use either of 2 methods that have been working for you to unlock iOS 5.0. It’s either Gevey SIM unlock or ultrasn0w unlock.

Option 1: Unlock using ultrasn0w

Option 2: Unlock using Gevey SIM

Do note that you may not be able to unlock iPhone if you upgraded to stock iOS 5.0.

Permanent IMEI Based Unlock for iPhone 4 & 3GS

If you want to unlock iPhone 4 baseband 04.10.01, or looking to unlock iPhone 3GS 05.16.02 baseband, now you can do it! Some websites are now offering permanent unlock for iPhone, that is independent of iOS versions which means that your unlock will not go away when you update to a future version of iOS. It’s because your IMEI based unlocking method will unlock iPhone as it would be done officially.

You will need to send your device IMEI over to them to let them complete the permanent iPhone unlock. If you have preserved your baseband (with sn0wbreeze 2.5.1 or PwnageTool 4.3) to any of following, you can use ultrasn0w 1.2.1 to unlock iPhone on iOS 4.3.1:

  • 01.59.00
  • 04.26.08
  • 05.11.07
  • 05.12.01
  • 05.13.04
  • 06.15.00

Unlock iPhone 4 4.3.1 Baseband 01.59 Unlock with Ultrasn0w

iPhone Dev Team has released an update for ultrasn0w. Newly released Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 is compatible with iOS 4.3.1 hence you can now unlock iPhone 4 4.3.1 iOS 01.59 baseband. To unlock iPhone 4 4.3.1, you need to have preserved your baseband to 01.59. Here’s the guide:

Unlock iPhone 4 4.3.1 Baseband 01.59

Step 1: Create custom iOS 4.3.1 IPSW with:

Step 2: Open Cydia and move to Manage tab.

Step 3: Tap on Sources.

Step 4: You will see a source named repo666.ultrasn0w.com, tap on it.

Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 4 4.3, iPhone 3GS 4.3

With Sn0wbreeze 2.3b4, you can now jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 4.3 iOS. Latest version of sn0wbreeze supports Ultrasn0w so if you have preserved your baseband while updating to iOS 4.3 or haven’t updated yet, you can unlock iOS 4.3 on iPhone 4.

What you need to know:

This is NOT a new unlock. Sn0wbreeze has just added support for ultrasn0w 1.2 to unlock 4.3 iOS on supported devices, which wasn’t there in earlier versions. With ultrasn0w 1.2, you can unlock iPhone baseband:

  • 01.59.00
  • 04.26.08
  • 05.11.07
  • 05.12.01
  • 05.13.04
  • 06.15.00 – iPad Baseband

This means, you can’t unlock 02.10.04 / 03.10.01 / 04.10.01 / 05.14.02 / 05.15.04 baseband versions.

Unlock iPhone 4 4.3 and iPhone 3GS 4.3

What you need:

Step 1: Use the downloaded sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 4.3 (do it with Baseband Preservation Mode).

Step 2: Start iPhone with help of iBooty 2.0.

Step 3: Start Cydia and move to Manage > Resources.

Step 4: Tap on “Edit”, then hit “Add”, a prompt should appear asking “Enter Cydia/APT URL”.

Step 5: Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ and hit “Add Source”, then tap on “Return to Cydia”.

Step 6: Once the process completes, search for ultrasn0w 1.2 in Cydia and install it.

Step 7: After installation, reboot your iPhone. That’s it!

No Unlock iPhone 4 4.3 iOS in Near Future

If you’re iPhone 4 user who relies on software unlock, you should NOT update to iOS 4.3 for now because you won’t be able to unlock iPhone 4 4.3 iOS. As MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team puts it:

Sorry, there’s no news on the i4 unlock for those who lost 01.59 (or never had it). It’s taking longer than we wanted :(

Ultrasn0w unlockers should know the drill! Don’t let iTunes trick you into installing today’s 4.3 iOS. Just say no!

So, it means users who updated their baseband won’t be able unlock. Ultrasn0w 1.2, released in November 2010, doesn’t support baseband 05.15 or later.

This should disappoint iPhone 4 users who rely on Ultrasn0w for unlock, however, you can update to iOS 4.3 without updating baseband and get the unlock this way. Just wait for PwnageTool 4.3 release and you’d be able to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 4.3 iOS. Still no good news for those who purchased iPhone 4 with iOS 4.2.1.

Ultrasn0w iOS 4.3 Unlock Release Confirmed

For those of you wondering if Ultrasn0w unlock for iOS 4.3 would make its way out anytime soon, iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that they may release iOS 4.3 unlock with Ultrasn0w after Apple releases it to public. As of now, iOS 4.3 beta 1 is available to developers. Here is the tweet from MuscleNerd that hints to Ultrasn0w 4.3 unlock plans:

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

Apple released CDMA Verizon iPhone with iOS 4.2.5, so it will be interesting to see the unlock scene.

3.10.01 & 2.10.04 Baseband Unlock iPhone 4 4.2.1 Release by January

For those of you who want 3.10.01 and 2.10.04 baseband unlock iPhone 4 4.2.1 iOS, rejoice! There’s good news regarding iOS 4.2.1 unlock for 2.10.04 baseband as well as for 3.10.01. According to a recent tweet from Sherif Hashim, iPhone 4 4.2.1 unlock could be just a month away. Here’s the Twitter conversation:

(English Translation: Gerges2001: @sherif_hashim I’m going to perform military service by January 16, will I get the unlock before this date? :D

There you go! Till then, we’re almost certain to have untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak as Comex and the iPhone Dev Team are working on it. Currently Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 6 can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 but that’s tethered. There is also Ultrasn0w 1.2 for those who want to unlock iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 and iPhone 3G 4.2.1.

PwnageTool Tutorial: Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 4 4.1, 3GS 4.1

PwnageTool 4.1 for Mac OS X was released yesterday with support for additional devices. You can now jailbreak and unlock iPhone 4 4.1 and iPhone 3GS 4.1 as well as iPhone 3G. Here is our PwnageTool tutorial that will help you along the process:

Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS 4.1 iOS with PwnageTool 4.1

Before you Begin:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB

Step 2: Launch PwnageTool 4.1 and select your device. PwnageTool will advise the firmware for your device.

Step 3: In next step, browse for downloaded iOS 4.1 IPSW for your device

A dialog box will appear asking “Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?” Clicking yes will update your baseband.

Step 4: Click “No” if you rely on baseband unlock, click “Yes” if you are on official carrier and don’t need to unlock your device.

PwnageTool will process the jailbreak and prepare the custom IPSW for oyu now. Once the process completes you will see “ihaz Success!” message on screen.

Step 5: Your custom IPSW is now ready. Load custom IPSW in iPhone, (see how to).

Unlock iOS 4.1 (iPhone 4 4.1 Unlock)

Once your iPhone has been jailbroken, you can unlock it with ultrasn0w 1.0 by following the steps given below:

Step 1: Run Cydia from SpringBoard.

Step 2: Tap on “Edit”, then hit “Add”, a prompt should appear asking “Enter Cydia/APT URL”.

Step 3: Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ and hit “Add Source”, then tap on “Return to Cydia”.

Step 4: Once the process completes, search for ultrasn0w 0.93 in Cydia and install it.

Step 5: After installation, reboot your iPhone.

Greenpois0n Hacktivation for iPhone 4 Confirmed? Sort of!

Upcoming Greenpois0n jailbreak may support iPhone 4 hacktivation. Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill aka p0sixninja has hinted for Greenpois0n hacktivation capability in recent tweet. When asked if Greenpois0n jailbreak will support iPhone 4 hacktivation, p0sixninja said “Yes”. Here is the original exchange of tweets:

p0sixninja: yes

If it is to be believed, it’s likely that SHAtter based Greenpois0n will preserve the baseband. It’s not certain though. MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has also hinted for release of updated PwnageTool to jailbreak iOS 4.1 / 4.2 while preserving your baseband. Let’s see what comes out of it.
